We are on the next step of our journey to becoming an IB World School!

Birchwood Elementary School is a candidate school for the Primary Years Programme. This school is pursuing authorization as an IB World School. These are schools that share a common philosophy—a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that Birchwood Elementary believes is important for our students.

*Only schools authorized by the IB Organization can offer any of its four academic programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Diploma Programme or the Career-related Programme (CP). Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorization will be granted.

Our teachers are working very hard on developing a Program of Inquiry for the 2016-17 school year. We are learning how to write Central Ideas and Lines of Inquiry and to use these to develop six units of inquiry for each grade level. As a candidate school, these next two to three years will be a trial implementation period of the PYP (Primary Years Program). After that time we will apply for authorized status as an IB world school.

Heather Griffin is our PYP coordinator and will be working with a consultant from the International Baccalaureate Organization who will support our school through the candidate phase as we work towards authorization.
